Overview

Incepted in 1997, the Steering Columns business focuses on the design and manufacture of manual and electric power steering columns for leading commercial and passenger vehicle OEMs, along with intermediate shafts for off-highway and all-terrain vehicle applications. Supported by a technical collaboration with NSK Ltd., Japan, the business has established itself as a market leader in India, combining advanced engineering capabilities with strong manufacturing expertise across four locations. Its operations are certified to ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management and ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety, reflecting a commitment to responsible and sustainable operations.

Product development is driven by a centralised R&D and product engineering function that ensures design and functional performance align closely with customer requirements. The engineering team comprises specialists in finite element analysis, CAD and CAM applications, and software analysis, supported by advanced tools such as CATIA and Abaqus for both implicit and explicit simulations. Structured development practices, including QFD, design reviews, and globally recognised Japanese engineering methodologies, are implemented across facilities, with new product development aligned to IATF 16949:2016 standards.

The business offers a wide range of steering column technologies focused on enhancing passenger safety, driver comfort, and vehicle performance. Energy-absorbing mechanisms are deployed to improve occupant protection during crash events, while ergonomic tilt and telescopic adjustments enhance driving comfort and reduce steering effort. Noise, vibration, and harshness characteristics are carefully managed to improve vehicle refinement, alongside optimised steering stiffness to deliver precise response and feel.

R&D capabilities are strengthened by a full-fledged test laboratory established in association with NSK, Japan, enabling comprehensive validation of manual and electric power assist steering columns. Testing covers column performance characteristics, strength and durability assessments, and detailed noise and vibration measurements, ensuring every product meets stringent safety, performance, and reliability expectations.
